Green Party of Tennessee candidate for GOVERNOR: ISA - TopicsExpress

Green Party of Tennessee candidate for GOVERNOR: ISA INFANTE I want to run for Governor of the State of Tennesse as a Green Party candidate. I have been Coordinating Chair of the Knox County Green Party since January 2013 and previously ran for Mayor of Knoxville in 2007. I see this journey as a grassroots, party-building endeavor serving primarily the following purposes: 1. visibility – many people in Tennessee are not aware that the Green Party exists and that they have viable choices other than the two dominant parties (Democrats and Republicans); 2. education – to get the Green Party message out to the public (the 10 key values); 3. recruitment – to attract people to the Green Party and increase our membership. My educational background includes a Ph.D. in political science (University of California; Yale), and a law degree (Northeastern Law School in Boston). I was born in the Dominican Republic of Dominican and Puerto Rican parents and arrived in the US in 1945 at the age of three. I have been a US citizen for almost as long. In the 60s I was elected to the state central committee of the California Peace & Freedom Party. In the 70s, while in graduate school, I was an officer in the Puerto Rican Socialist Party. Later, I was an academic dean at one of the State University of New York (SUNY) campuses in Manhattan. During that period I also worked at the White House alongside Sarah Weddington, author of Roe v. Wade, creating an Interdepartmental Task Force on Women. In the 80s I was director of the Latin American Studies program at Jersey City State College and also a professor of Political Science. In 1986 I moved to Tennessee to create a bluegrass band and lived in Nashville, Sugar Tree (near Camden) and Dickson. I arrived in Knoxville in 1991, went to California for a couple of years in the mid- 90s to care for my mother who was ill at the time. I also left for another three years – 2002 to 2005 – to attend law school in Boston. During my time in Knoxville I have been active in theatre as well as in community organizations. At present I live in public housing and was recently elected Secretary of the Resident Association. I also participate in the Neighborhood Watch, the community garden, a community Improv comedy troupe, a feminist collective, a couple of community health & fitness groups, and I’m in the process of researching and writing on the female labor slave trade in the US and also writing my memoir. I want to continue making a positive contribution to making this a better world for all of us and not just for the privileged few. I believe this campaign will be an important way of contributing. Thank you in advance for your support. isainfante.org
