Greenpeace releases Russian video OLIVIA WANNAN Last updated 18:35 09/11/2013 Dramatic footage of the moment Russian authorities landed on the Arctic Sunrise protest boat from a helicopter has been released by Greenpeace. Thirty people, 28 activists and two journalists, were arrested during a protest at Russia’s first offshore Arctic oil rig, in the remote Pechora Sea in September. New Zealanders Jon Beauchamp and David Haussmann were two of the detainees. Greenpeace said the video demonstrated the activists and crew “responding peacefully” with arms raised, as armed Russian officials abseil down from a helicopter hovering above the ship. The footage also shows the boat being towed to the arctic city of Murmansk, where the activists are currently being held. The video release follows reports Russia would add resisting arrest to charges of hooliganism for several Greenpeace activists. Russian investigators initially charged all those aboard the Arctic Sunrise with piracy. Last month, investigators said they were changing the charge to hooliganism, cutting the maximum jail sentence they face to seven years from 15 years. But Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for a state investigative team which reports directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said some of the activists, in addition to being charged with hooliganism, will face charges of resisting law officers, which would carry a maximum five year-prison sentence. “A few boats approached the platform, and with the aid of special equipment, they tried to climb up the platform. They completely ignored the authorities orders. Furthermore, if you recall, they rammed the coastguard ship,” Markin said in an interview on Russian news site Gazeta.ru. Jon Beauchamp’s partner Tania Purtle had heard the reports of possible new charges, but nothing had been confirmed yet, she said. She was also unsure whether Mr Beauchamp would be included in the number to receive the resisting arrest charge. “I honestly don’t know – I wish I did.” In the nearly two months since her partner had been arrested, news of what was happening to the detainees was often conflicting. Last week, Greenpeace was told the activists would be moved to St Petersburg. “But they’re still in Murmansk. I believe they might be moved this weekend, but again these are all just rumours.” It was now about three weeks since she had been able to last speak with Mr Beauchamp, which was difficult. “I don’t want to say you get used it, but you do kind of end up getting used to it in a sense.” Europe British soldier guilty of murdering Taliban fighter Britains adversaries reveling in Snowden leaks Intelligence chiefs to discuss Snowden leaks Olympic torch heads to space Murder victim left to rot Heirs bids for looted art trove UN call to mark Winter Olympics with a truce Knox bolstered by new DNA evidence Dublin mystery woman Samantha has 40 aliases Octogenarians set to double in Britain by 2037...stuff.co.nz/world/europe/9382762/Greenpeace-releases-Russian-video - Fairfax NZ with Reuters Saved Stories Next Europe story:British soldier guilty of murdering Taliban fighterWorld Homepage Ads by Google Canon vs Nikon:UglyHedgehog Which is better?
