Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Recognizes Officer who Helped Stranded Visitor GREENSBORO, NC (May 2, 2014) – Representatives from the Greensboro Area Conventions and Visitors Bureau honored police officer A.L. McIntosh today for helping a visitor return home after he became stranded here due to a series of unfortunate events. On October 12, 2013, a 49-year-old man was walking on High Point Road looking for a place to eat. He had about an hour before he needed to board a bus to take him home to New York City. The visitor was in Greensboro to attend his father’s funeral. As he was looking for a restaurant, two men in a car stopped to ask him for directions. The men then exited the vehicle, and one of them threatened the visitor with a knife and demanded his possessions. After being robbed of his cell phones and wallet, the victim called police. Officer A.L. McIntosh was dispatched to the scene, took the report, and learned what had happened to the visitor. “He was basically stranded -- with no money, no identification, and no family left to help him get home,” said Sgt. A.B. Barnes, McIntosh’s supervisor. “One can only imagine the hopelessness and despair the victim felt.” When the bus arrived, McIntosh asked the driver if the victim could pay his fare once he arrived in New York City. When the driver declined, McIntosh went to an ATM and withdrew enough money from his account for the man to buy a bus ticket home. “This is a great story of humanity and compassion,” said GACAVB President Henri Fourrier, who presented McIntosh with the award. “Often, visitors to our city interact with police. In addition to protecting them and keeping them safe, police also serve as ambassadors to our city. We appreciate the helpfulness you show our guests.” “If I was caught in a tough spot like this visitor, I would hope someone would do the same for me,” said McIntosh. The Greensboro Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has been offering the award to GPD officers since 1996. The robbers have not been caught.
