Greetings, Stoddert Families. As we head into our last weekend of summer break, we want to bring your attention to a few things. · The first day of school is set for Monday, August 25. Note that PreK employs a transition week: August 25-27 has been set aside for individual parent-teacher conferences. Children with last names A-K first attend a full day of school on Thursday, August 28; children with last names L-Z first attend a full day of school on Friday, August 29; and then, Tuesday, September 2 is the first official day of school for the entire PreK. · This coming Saturday (August 23) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. is the tenth annual Stoddert Beautification Day—please come out and help get the school ready during this DCPS-sponsored event (children are welcome and encouraged to attend). Show up, help out and let the kids play and visit with one another. Visit the DCPS website to learn more. If you’re able to bring gardening gloves, garden shears, pruners, spades and other small gardening tools, they might come in handy. dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/ · Friday, August 29 is our Back to School Potluck; 5:30-7:30 at the school; children of all ages welcome; no fee; bring a dish to share. Please donate books for the Book Exchange! · Don’t forget that Monday, September 1 is Labor Day – no school. · Breaking News: Mayor Vincent Gray today announced that he has adopted new school boundary and feeder pattern recommendations made by the Deputy Mayor for Education, Abigail Smith. Upon a cursory review, it appears that Stoddert’s boundary will change as follows: o Areas south of Whitehaven Pkwy (roughly Burleith) will be resignated from Stoddert to Hyde-Addison (change previously shared with the public). o A triangular block on Stoddert’s northern boundary comprised of Massachusetts Ave, 39th St. and Macomb (east side of Mass Ave) will be rezoned to Eaton Elementary School (change previously shared with the public). o NEW: Stoddert’s northern boundary will be further altered, rezoning to Eaton areas north of Cathedral Avenue to Massachusetts Avenue. This appears to include the 3000 block of Idaho Ave, the 3000 and 3100 blocks of 39th Street, the 3800 block of Klingle Place and some addresses along Cathedral and Massachusetts Avenues. o The Washington Post has created an address look-up tool that reflects the new boundaries where you can check your family’s address: washingtonpost/wp-srv/special/local/dc-school-zones/ o The boundary changes into Hyde-Addison will not begin until the modernization of Hyde-Addison is complete in SY16-17. Other boundaries take effect for SY15-16. o There is grandfathering. Current Stoddert students who are rezoned may remain at Stoddert through 5th grade; siblings may also attend Stoddert so long as the sibling enters Stoddert while the other sibling is still in attendance there. A “Phase-In Policies” FAQ has been created as part of the DME materials: dme.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dme/publication/attachments/Boundary%20Phase-In%20Policies.pdf o Stoddert continues to feed to Hardy Middle School and Wilson High School (as do Eaton and Hyde-Addison). o To read the Washington Post article announcing the adoption of the DME recommendations, click here. o To read the Stoddert School Boundary and Feeder Pathway document produced by the DME, click here. o To download and review all of the DME final documents, click here. o Many are questioning what this all means, considering Mayor Gray will leave office in early January. The school lottery launched in December last year, so it’s possible that next school year’s lottery will also launch in December (of this year) and would reflect the changes adopted by the Mayor today. From what we’ve read, the newly elected mayor would have the authority to undo the plan adopted today, if he or she so wishes.
