Greetings from Dr. Thornton July 1, 2014 Dear City Schools - TopicsExpress

Greetings from Dr. Thornton July 1, 2014 Dear City Schools Community, A little more than four months ago, the Board of School Commissioners announced my appointment as City Schools’ new CEO. Today, my official first day on the job, I am pleased to introduce myself to you, my new colleagues on the staff and partners in the community. I also want to thank you for the support and well wishes I’ve already received from many of you. Although I made several visits to Baltimore over the past four months, I am excited today to call Baltimore home – and to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I am honored that the Board selected me to serve as CEO, and I’m personally and professionally thrilled to be joining you here at City Schools. This district is rich in talent and dedication, with a national reputation and proven record of improving outcomes for students. Add to that the energy and excitement of the 21st-Century Buildings Plan and the early successes with roll-out of new college- and career-ready curricular frameworks, and it’s clear that Baltimore is the place to be. I look forward in the coming months and years to even greater success for Baltimore’s children and, with you, to ensuring strong futures for them and for our city. Those of you who have read a little about my background know that I’ve spent most of my life in this part of the country. (And though I’m not likely to give up cheering for my hometown Phillies and Eagles, I’m now cheering for the Orioles and Ravens, too – definitely my favorite teams…in the AL and AFC.) In the next few weeks, I’ll be revisiting familiar places and getting to know schools and neighborhoods that are new to me. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and to hearing your ideas about getting the 2014-15 school year off to a great start – and building on that momentum throughout the year. Thank you in advance for your support as we head toward August 25. With your partnership, it’s going to be a great year. Sincerely, Gregory E. Thornton, Ed.D. CEO Baltimore City Public Schools
