Greetings from the GWN.........I really wanted to post something about baking for this season. I realized most of the people who may read this are much better bakers than I am, so tips was out........so I settled on this, forgive me if I ramble. A little history. What we call baking actually started as far back as written history with a heat source, an open fire, and a vessel, a large gourd. As we progressed we switched to a clay/earthen pot, still open fire. Then we moved inside with a large hearth to contain our still open fire, but we switch to a cast iron vessel, the dutch oven. Then with the help of Mr. Westinghouse, who created a box with a control for the heating temperature and a timer, our oven. The vessel has change a little, but not much. EVERY....BODY CAN BAKE, if they choose to. There are so many LIFE lessons that can be taught with the basics of baking. Start with basic dessert baking.....cakes & cookies. Cake, 3 basic things.......Mathematics, Science, Creativity. Flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt. Individually none of theses tastes good, with the exception of sugar. However, proper measurements of each (Mathematics) with the proper heat and time (Science) will create something delicious (Creativity). Life lessons that can be learned/taught along with the basic 3. *Time management - So many areas from how long to bake and the results of too long or not enough to clean-up. *Rejection & praise - Taste/looks good or not. Never let looks influence your perception of taste! Most people will still eat their dessert one bite at a time regardless of the looks. Those perfect pictures you see in magazines......you may not want to eat that after the shoot if you found out what it took for perfection. I feel my rambling....I encourage every baker out there to help a non baker. Teach our young kids, get them into the kitchen and off their computer screens. If they are about 5 yrs. old and wanting to lick the beater/mixing spoon, show them what you are doing. Maybe not during the rush of Thanksgiving, but set up a special time dedicated to them. Sugar cookies are a great example, several stop & start steps that are not too time consuming. Maybe a cake with frosting? Thats my 2 cents........ Next up........Christmas trees.....Oh I can not wait, and with the lots already setting up I may have to post soon. Gotta go....
