Greetings from the largest public square in Latin America and second in the world only surpassed in size by Red Square in Moscow...the Zocalo in Mexico City. Here, perhaps a half million people filled the area and the streets leading to it this evening to celebrate the Day of the Dead. In front of the Metropolitan Cathedral a stage was set up for concerts of Cuban music by a group called La Gua Gua, as well as two women who sang operatic arias, popular music and most interesting, their promotion of songs in indigenous languages from the State of Oaxaca. The last group was a bass and two violinists who performed music to honor Mexican composers of the classical genre now deceased. Throughout the concert I couldnt help but think of how isolated people in the US are from the rest of the countries of the Americas. How sad so many Americans have such a shallow perspective of the countries around them. Shame on the US govt which has been condemned by the United Nations 22 years in a row for its inhumane and barbaric treatment toward the island of Cuba because of its embargo. The evening was a culmination of a wonderful day with friends at the Museo de Dolores Olmeda, one of the great museums of the world housing the works of Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orosco, impressionist as well as pre-Colombian art.
