Greetings of divine mercy, peace and light, asalaamualaykum! Happy and blessed new year in the Hijri Calendar. It was 1436 years ago that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saws) migrated from Mecca to Medina to establish the first Muslim Community and to set the model for an interdependent and harmonious society that transcends differences of even religion and tribe. It was this historic journey known as the Hijrah, or migration, that marks the beginning of the Muslim Calender, and there is a deep meaning in this, for the entire spiritual path is one of migration. The path of spiritual development is a journey from dunya, the world, to the Divine Presence. The Way is from the ego and self to Allah Almighty, and from falsehood and illusion to Truth and Reality. THE DAY OF ASHURA And on the 10th Day of this holy month of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which even before the time of the Prophet (saws) was recognized as a profoundly spiritual day of salvation and success for they who seek the Divine Presence of the Eternal, and who are prepared to leave the false gods of the world for the Truth of the Absolute, the One. In addition to many other events of great importance, it was on this holy day that Allah Almighty saved Moses and his people from the Pharoah, that Abraham was saved from the blazing fire of Nimrod set to extinguish the light of prophecy, and that Adam was saved from the Great Flood. And it was on this holy day that Hussayn (as) and 72 members of the family of the Prophet (saws) made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of the Community. In honor of this holy day, the Prophet (saws) fasted on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, which are scheduled to occur this Sunday and Monday (please check with your local community for exact dates), and recommended for all believers to fast. This is one of the holiest of all days in the entire year, and it is a day in which one may attain great relief from persistent suffering and hardship. Radita, use this opportunity to seek the Divine Presence and the support of the Almighty, and to attain relief from any worldly matter that is pressing upon your peace.
