Greetings to all - In reference to the ride to the 911 Memorial in Columbia, SC., on Wednesday, 11 September, 2013, for those of us who cannot make it to Washington, DC. It is planned that all who want to go with Chris and I will meet at the Tractor Supply store on Hwy. 17-A in Summerville, SC. (East of Hwy. 26, on the North side of Hwy. 17-A near Sangaree) This gives easy access to I-26 Westbound. Staging: 0800 Briefing: 0815 KSU: 0830 Doing the speed limit, this will put us in Columbia between 1030 and 1100, depending on the length of our midpoint stop. We will stop on the way at the 159 Exit at the Pilot Truck Stop on the East side of I-26. This will allow for a personal break, gas, simple stretch, get a drink, whatever. (PLEASE remember to start hydrating the day before and stay hydrated during the ride. It will still be warm weather on this day) We will get of I-26 at Exit 111, toward Columbia, this is Hwy. 1. (Meeting Street) We will stay to the right and after crossing the bridge over Broad River, Meeting Street becomes Gervais Street. After crossing Huger Street and Wayne Street we will make a right turn onto Lincoln Street. According to the map, the 911 Memorial is on the second block of Lincoln Street on the left. I have been told there is a parking lot there, so we will not have to look for street parking. Plan on spending approximately one hour at the memorial. Subject to change upon arrival and group decision. Prior to departure from the memorial we will discuss whether or not folks want to stop, on the return trip, for lunch or just a rest stop similar to the one on the way up. I have not been able to identify any memorial ceremonies being planned in our local area. If I learn of any I will advise at the briefing and we can decide if we want to try to go to one on our return to the local area. PLEASE RMEMEBER - This is NOT a protest ride of any kind. Our goal is to remember and honor all those who lost their lives I the events of September, 2001. If you plan to make and/or bring any kind of sign, please make it in good taste. We are going as citizens, in remembrance of American lives lost. As long as we do that, we can keep it that way and make a good showing for those we intend to honor and to preserve the good image of motorcycling. Further - This is not a permit ride which means ALL TRAFFIC REGULATIONS AND SIGNALS MUST BE OBSERVED BY ALL RIDERS. SEE NEXT POST.
