Greetings to everyone, I apologize as this is going be a long post. Most of us have Mini Schnauzer here, our Timmy, male, is age of 6 years 8 months. In June 2014, we started to notice that he was not jumping onto the sofa or stand on two legs when given treats (he use to hop and greet us with 2 hind legs, or when treats was given, jump onto sofa or our beds etc). We bought him to The Island Vet @ Jurong East in August 2014 and X-ray was done. No signs of bone fracture or anything were found, but the vet diagnosed and confirms that he is having arthritis at the hind legs and ask us to feed him Glucosamine. We did what was told. Everything was ok he can walk properly, no limping or dragging of his legs, able to pee and poo at his usual newspaper corner by himself. In September 2014, he was having diarrhea for a few days. We bought him to Joyous Vet @ CCK in the noon to treat his diarrhea and also told the vet about his arthritis condition, not jumping etc. The vet did some examination (pulling his hind legs, stretching it, doing the reflex motion on all his paws). For the reflex done on the hind paws, he reacted very slowly. A normal dog should react to almost immediately when the reflex is done. Nothing much can be concluded, the vet gave us nerve supplement to help and see if his legs will improve. On the way back home, he was walking fine and nothing unusual was discovered until evening time when we wanted to feed him his medication. He was in seated position when feeding him the medicine. Out of sudden he just scream so badly (in pain), and fall flat on the ground and his urine just flow out. We rush him to The Island Vet immediately as it is nearer to us than Joyous Vet. On the way to the vet he was crying...:(. He was given pain killer injection and X-ray was done again on the spine and no fracture, dislocation or slip disc was seen. The vet gave us oral pain killer with inflammation medicine and us ask to bring him home to observe. He couldnt walk, his hind legs were weak and he could no longer control his urine or poo (incontinence in urinary & fecal). He can pee and poo in lying down position. All these happen too suddenly. After 3 days, we bought him to Mount Pleasant @ Sunset Way for 2nd opinion as he was still not moving or rather very minimal movement and his diarrhea still continues. The Vet confirms that he had stomach infection so antibiotic was given. He told us to treat one issue at a time, settle his diarrhea first. As for the weak legs and incontinence, we were told to observe and come back for review in a week time. One week later, we went back for review, Timmy had started to walk but still weak, the vet said it’s a good signs. But he still could not control his urine and poo. The vet named two possibilities, 1) Tumor on his spinal, 2) Slip disc which is affecting his nerve. These can only be detected by CT scan. Normal X-Ray cannot tell. He told us to continue and observe, because at this moment CT scan is not required as he had already started to walk. CT scan is usually recommended when the dog is undergoing surgery. We started to put him on diaper. So he can roam around the house freely. But wearing diaper can be problematic too; we found blood in his urine, bought him to The Joyous Vet again (as Mount Pleasant not open). Did urine test and confirm that he developed Urinary Tract Infection due to wearing diaper. Antibiotic was given. The vet also gives him a medicine which can help him to control the bladder muscles hoping that his incontinence can improve. She also diagnoses that Timmy’s butt muscles is no longer sensitive when touched (not twitching at all). Which means the colon is not sending signal to his brain that he needs to poo. It could be a nerve injury at the lower back or inherited diseases. Vet asks us to come back for review in 4 weeks’ time. At the moment, we bring him for short walks and swim as recommended by vet to build his hind legs muscles. It had already been 1 month since his screaming incident, Timmys diarrhea and urine infection had been cured. But his urinary & fecal incontinence still persist. We will bring him to the vet soon again. We really pray and hope he will get well again as he is still consider quite young. Have any one here encounter this with your pet? What are the chances of him getting well again? He cannot wear diaper now, due to this we have to confine him in one area which is very sad. He used to roam around the whole house. Hope to hear from you guys. Thanks
