Groups Want Equal Representation In Govt. Saturday, 01 March 2014 NIGERIAN women under the auspices of the Association of Professional Women Bankers (ACIB) and Centre for Gender Issues in Science and Technology (CEGIST), of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure have demanded for critical examination of certain societal factors responsible for undermining the maximum utilization of their potentials in the country. The groups admonished this yesterday in Lagos at a joint press conference held to herald a week-long activities lined up for the commemoration of the forthcoming International Women day on March 7-8 at Akure, Ondo State. According to the groups, its unfortunate that people in position of authourities in the country have not practically done enough in providing a level playing ground or removing the hindrances responsible for women’s suppression in the country. They argued that even the 30 percent women representation vowed by the government are not sincerely implemented. According to the acting Director, CEGIST, Dr. Mojisola Edema, women are not in competition with men. All we are agitating for is equal opportunity. “And when we talk of equality, it is not an attempt for competition. We are simply demanding for this so as to enhance balanced development of both genders”. Edema, a Micro Biologist and Senior lecturer at FUTA said their groups are also adopting strategic steps to get man more educated about the enormous benefits accruable to both genders, when none is being discriminated against. “Minster of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Onwuliri; Wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko, Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu are part of dignitaries expected to grace the International Women’s day (IWD) celebration billed to hold in Akure, Ondo State on the 7th and 8th of March this year.” Speaking earlier, the 2nd Vice President of ACIB, Mrs. Tinuke Leye-iSola said this year’s commemoration of International Women day which will be hosted by FUTA also features official unveiling of a project tagged Mentoring for Growth (C4G)- a developmental project with two fundamental components: Knowledge Development Initiative (KDI) for Youths and Women Productivity Stimulus Scheme (WPSS), all designed to empower the women and youths against poverty and perpetual manipulation.
