Growing up in a one-bedroom apartment as a first generation Mexicana and the second oldest of six, in Compton California, never in my life would I have ever imagined I would be traveling to the Dominican Republic. Today, Melanie and I have been blessed with the opportunity to study abroad in the Dominican Republic this summer for a public health program. This program is not just a studying abroad experience, but rather an opportunity to get insight into issues of public health in other Latin American countries. We want to spread awareness and ultimately voice our perspectives on what needs to change to create equitable health resources for all of Latin America as well as our communities here at home.
