Growing up in pre- 1994 South Africa I was deprived of many - TopicsExpress

Growing up in pre- 1994 South Africa I was deprived of many international products. This is because some very kind people boycotted and imposed sanctions on my country. I thank them, they are the reason I now enjoy freedom in my own country. Freedom to choose how to live my life, freedom to pursue my dreams. I now have a duty, an obligation in my small way to try and make such a difference in some childs life in another country. I find it strange that the same people who complain about the marginalization or oppression of ethnic minorities in SA & Malaysia for example or women in Arabia seem to support the oppressive Israeli regime. We cannot be selective in who is allowed to oppress others. It has to be condemned in Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Myanmar, Xinjiang, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and everywhere else. Is the double standard because some perceive the war in Gaza as a Muslim issue? Do we forget that there are Christians also suffering in Palestine even some Jews. I urge everyone to stop only reading the propaganda, and I mean the propaganda from both sides. Do more research. Or better yet, if possible talk to someone involved. The woman who wakes up in a foreign country with her limbs blown off and no idea where her children are (cast lead). Talk to the Syrian man who fears for his (Muslim) mothers life because she cannot leave her country. Talk to the young student who has seen her grandparents once in her life because she cannot travel 20kms in her own country to visit them- they live on opposite sides of the Israeli Apartheid wall. Talk to the person who lost his friend in the Westgate mall to an al-Shabab attack. Experience their loss. The BDS movement does not call for a boycott of everything Jewish, the call is for products that allows someone to benefit directly from the suffering of others. So yes I support the BDS. You ask why the target is Israel? Well we have to start somewhere, this cause enjoys the most global support right now. It does not mean that the actions of Boko Haram, Al-Shabab, the Asad regime, etc is condoned. But this is the hope, when the biggest tyrant is toppled, In sha Allah the smaller ones will soon follow.
