Guardian(Luck) Bells Every culture has its lore about mischievous creatures and spirits (Kokopeli, Loki, Briar Rabbit, Pan, Puck, etc..). In the biker world it is no different. We call them Road Gremlins, Road Devils, etc. They are said to love to ride hitch a lift on any bike and cause all sorts of problems like mechanical issues, oil in the road, trouble shifting, dead batteries, etc. But just like other legendary tricksters they can’t stand ‘Happy, Sweet Sounds’ like the noise a bell makes. Legend says placing a bell on your bike wards off these little devils from hitching a ride. If you already have one it will be trapped in the hollow of the bell till the ringing drives it insane making it weak and unable to hold on to your bike and fall off. You can buy a bell and put it on your bike but it is said the ‘magic’ is stronger if the bell is a gift. It doesn’t matter where on the bike you hang your bell just as long as it is secure. I know not everyone ‘believes’ in this sort of thing, but I do just like the horseshoe over my door, throwing spilled salt over my shoulder, not walking under ladders, and dozens of other things I do without thinking because I was taught by my elders of the ‘magic’ in it. Make your own choice but now you know why bells hang on so many bikes – what can it hurt?
