Guardians of the Galaxy: A movie review. Another week. Another comic book movie. There might be spoilers below. Went with: Toby de Luca and Jerry Biggerstaff! As I have mentioned previously in other comic book reviews, I was not a child who took to comic books growing up. Do I regret this, yes. How do I make up for it? In three ways, I go see all DC and Marvel movies, I read a lot of reviews and Wiki pages about the back stories, and I excel in a different form of literature, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and J.R.R. Tolkien lore. Cha-Ching! (Got to be good at something, right?) So, I must say this to begin with, If you havent been keeping up with your DC and/or Marvel (GotG is Marvel) then you seriously need to. All the movies build on each other like a lego castle of childhood dreams If you miss the starter movies you might miss important aspects of future ones. During the Marvel opening logo, I thought to myself, Marvel has truly become a serious force of cinematic prowess. Then the movie opened up to Earth, 1988 with Starlord (the main character) as a boy listening to a walkman. Well, maybe not TOO seriously! Although, the opening was very tragically Pixars UP or Finding Nemo-ish. In short, this movie is a whole lotta fun. It establishes characters (and villains) while paying homage to SOOOOOOO many cinematic references before it. While watching I picked up a few for myself: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Last Star Fighter, and Titan A.E. to name but a few. The main villains name is Ronan which triggered my love for Jason Momoas same named character (different spelling) in Stargate Atlantis. However, through the entire film I couldnt shake Ronans very similar look and mannerisms to Brent Spiners Data character on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Needles to say, my brain was spinning the entire time with a myriad of Scifi references. Thanos, the arch-nemesis of this Marvel Universe is in this film. So for those of you who remember his appearance at the end of the first Avengers movie (The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Director Fury, etc.) this is in the same universe. So, one can assume, that both the GotG AND The Avengers will eventually team up to kick serious ass! (Or die trying!) The graphics and FX are amazing. Although the protagonist homeworld of Xandar looks vaguely familiar to the utopian space station of Elysium (starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster). And there are very loose laws of science about how one can survive in the vacuum of space. But hey, its a comic book right? The movie is formulaic, but it works. Its very Avenger-like, but Im sure it was meant to be. And in the end, its fun for the whole family. Im starting to think, however, that Comic book Cinema is becoming the pit stop so many in Hollywood are finding too tempting an opportunity to ignore. Two thumbs up! Its a great reprieve to serious comic book movies but I have a feeling that this whole universe is about to blow up. If DCs Batman franchise is any indication (adding more and more characters every subsequent movie), we are in for a TON of plot-lines and intersecting craziness. Stay tuned! Enjoy! Oh, and Howard the Duck! (that is all)
