What is it with our media? Yesterday Tony Abbott did two clearly inappropriate things, yet only one has been reported in the press. His captains choice of Prince Phillip as a knight of Australia is the one that is getting all the attention today, but the other has not rated a mention. During his Australia Day address he said We will continue working towards completing our constitution by recognising the first Australians and then added The spirit of generous inclusion has always marked our nation at its best. Considering that he has declared himself a champion of Indigenous recognition in Australias Constitution, this additional comment strongly suggests a previously hidden agenda. Our Prime Minister appears to believe that recognition of the long history of Aboriginal occupancy of Australia is not a matter of historical fact or natural justice, but a benevolent gift to be doled out at whim. This indicates that the Recognise campaign is nothing more than an extension of the paternalistic control which has kept Aboriginal people in poverty for generations. If you think I am wrong about this, lets debate it out in the. Sadly, I suspect no media group will touch it.
