Guardians of the Galaxy Profile: Rocket Raccoon The Guardians - TopicsExpress

Guardians of the Galaxy Profile: Rocket Raccoon The Guardians of the Galaxy face all kinds of menaces, many of them extremely powerful and out of the league of many a Marvel superhero. So how is it their secret weapon is a sharpshooting, wisecracking raccoon from outer space? Rocket Raccoon is not your run-of-the-mill varmint. He’s the one you want on your side in a firefight against impossible odds. If you want to know why, let’s take a look at his background in the comic books. Behind the scenes: In 1976 Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen created Rocket Raccoon in a story for Marvel Preview #7. If you’re wondering, yes, the Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon” was the direct inspiration for the character. He even teamed up with The Incredible Hulk to prevent a villain from stealing ‘Gideon’s Bible.’ Origins: Rocket is from a region of outer space known as the Keystone Quadrant. His home planet, Halfworld, was a planetary insane asylum where animals were genetically engineered to have human intelligence and characteristics. Rocket was the guardian and protector of Halfworld. Eventually, he meets The Hulk, Star-Lord and several other cosmic beings and superheroes of the Marvel Universe. In recent years, he was asked by Star-Lord to join his Guardians of the Galaxy team, where Rocket was involved in conflicts with the Shi’Ar, the Phalanx and the Starjammers, as well as Ronan the Accuser. He was responsible for recruiting Groot to the Guardians. Powers: Every super-team needs that one member without any special powers and abilities, who can nonetheless solve problems and kick butt, and the Guardians have Rocket Raccoon. A sort-of Han Solo with fur, Rocket is an expert marksman and combatant, and a superb interstellar pilot (his starship is named the Rack’n’Ruin). He’s also an accomplished military tactician, making him the natural leader of the Guardians in Star-Lord’s absence. Important storylines: Luckily, Marvel has collected Rocket’s major appearances in one single volume: Rocket Raccoon & Groot: The Complete Collection.
