The workshop was attended by Union Women & Children Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, ministers and legislators and delegates of different states. Gujarat’s Minister of State for Women & Child Welfare Vasuben Trivedi was also present. Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Patel said that Gujarat has introduced the concept of ‘Gender Budget’ with a view to upholding the self prestige and esteem of women, making budgetary allocations for women-specific projects and programmes for their economic empowerment. She said that one of the biggest achievements of the state’s women empowerment campaign is ‘Mission Mangalam’, under which Rs.2,000-crore has been handed over to 30-lakh women members of Sakhi Mandals for self-employment and skill development. The ‘Amritam-Ma’ and ‘Ma-Vatsalya’ schemes take care of women’s healthcare. The state achieved remarkable improvement in maternal and infant mortality rates under ‘Chiranjeevi’ scheme. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mrs. Patel recalled, he had launched the ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign to save the girl child and ‘Beti Padhao’ campaign to educate girls under ‘Kanya Kelavni’ scheme. It paid dividend in the form of reducing gender inequality and school dropout rate. Other initiatives include reserving 33 per cent of vacancies in the police force, providing cash assistance of Rs.90,000 to girl candidates clearing preliminary tests for IAS, IPS and other Central government competitive examinations. Mrs. Patel also reiterated her resolve to provide toilet facility in every home in Gujarat in the next two years under the nationwide ‘Swatch Bharat Abhiyan’. -x-x-x-x-
