‘Gulf of Guinea, not secure’ The Cross River State Government has raised the alarm over the increasing insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea. The State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, made this known when he received the new Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship Victory, Commodore Frederick Ogu, in Government House in Calabar on Wednesday. He said federal authorities had intensified maritime patrol and general security along the coastal areas to overcome the security challenges. “The federal authorities should intensify maritime patrols and general security operations along coastal areas adjoining the Gulf of Guinea due to increasing security challenges around the general maritime area,” he said. Bassey, however, commended the Navy for its efforts in stemming the tide of piracy and sea robbery in the area thus keeping the state safe and secure. He said being a state whose economic mainstay is tourism, security must be accorded top priority at all times. “Though the state remains the safest and most peaceful in the country, we cannot rest on our laurels,” he said. Bassey commended the recent appointment of the Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin as the new Chief of Naval Staff. He said as a former Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Jibrin was a first-class military officer, who was bound to bring great innovations to the Navy. The SSA urged Jibrin to lend support to the two Navy formations in the state. In his response, the new Commander of NNS Victory, commended the state government for the support it had lent to his command in the past. Ogu said such support, including the donation of gunboats, had helped the Command to execute its activities well. He, however, stated that there was more to be done and asked for further support to assist the Navy in the execution of its activities. Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
