Gwen Murphy-My paintings often depict somewhere I’ve never been, except in my mind—places that are somewhere between reality and fantasy. The landscape features are not necessarily true to nature—they may be exaggerated, simplified or stylized. I enjoy exploring shapes and patterns, using bold colours and incorporating lines to divide areas into smaller parts. Because I don’t want my work to be too realistic, I am free to include some of my favourite colours where they might otherwise not appear. And because there is no expectation of being authentic, I can use shapes and patterns of my choice. I like my work to be cheerful and bright–I don’t let realism get in the way of portraying subject matter.
