Gwen’s Affirmation for Today…Today, I adapt and adjust to change. When my husband and I built our house over 40 years ago, there were only about two other houses located on our road, and the road was unpaved. You have never lived until you have traveled along a dirt road behind another car eating the dust it kicked up. There have been many changes over the years where I live. I think the one that made me the happiest was when Earthlink called me up and told me I could get better internet coverage and no longer would have to put up with slow dial up connection. I must have asked that salesman 4 or 5 times, “Are you sure I can get this coverage?” Then when he got me signed up, I said, “You have made my day!” About 2 years ago, things began to change even more. A cattle farmer leased the property across the road from us and began clearing all the trees in order to build a fenced-in pasture and feed lot for calves. It was such a strange experience when all the trees were cleared out. It was like the whole sky opened up and was finally giving us sunlight. In the past, any time we got snow, it would take days for it to melt off of the road because the trees blocked the sunlight from shining on the snow. There were many car accidents due to this change in the landscape. It was as if people no longer had the trees as a point of reference to guide them along the curvature of the road. They would be driving up the hill looking at the cleared land, and before they knew what was happening, BAM…they were finding themselves in the ditch. Last year, things took another new turn on our road. Neighbors…we now have neighbors. There have been 8 new houses built next to us. I had to get used to being awoken at 7:00 a.m. by the sound of banging with all the construction going on. I adjusted pretty easily to all the trees being gone, but I haven’t made the transition as easily to seeing all the new houses. Last week, as I was turning onto our road, I felt like I was boxed in by all the houses. I really didn’t like that feeling. I guess I will get used to it. I’m sure that is how people felt many years ago when the skyscrapers were built in the big cities. Life is always evolving in our world. Change is inevitable, adjust to the changes and move on.
