Gwinear 9(2) Newlyn 0(0) After all the Christmas festivities - TopicsExpress

Gwinear 9(2) Newlyn 0(0) After all the Christmas festivities and excitement over the past few days, it was back to business for the old Gits this week. After a convincing win against Madron last Saturday, we came up against another bottom of the league side and one we knew we had to take the points from in order to maintain our good run of form, keeping pressure on the three teams above us... Promotion is still very much alive. From the off, Newlyn played the better football. It took Gwinear 20 minutes to get into the swing of things but once we found feet, we started playing the football we know that we can. It was midway through the first half when Gwinear struck first with a brilliant effort on the edge of the box from Josh Chandler. He won the ball on the right hand side, dribbled into the centre and let loose with a left foot strike, beating the keeper with the ball into the bottom right. After some more good play by Gwinear, Mushy picked the ball up on left hand side and played an inch perfect ball across the face of the goal. Defender and goalkeeper deceived, Dave Bartlam goes for the simple tap in from a yard but hit the far post. Quite an embarrassing moment but one that I knew Id have to put right; I did buy a jug of beer for the lads after the game to make up for it :) With ten minutes left of the first half, the ball was won in the midfield and played through to Dave Bartlam who picked it up on the edge of the box, closely followed by a defender. The touch from Bartlam was enough to take it away from the defender, who the caught him on the heel, bringing him down to the ground. With the keeper advancing, Bartlam reaches for the ball and puts enough on it to beat the goalie and score the second of the half. A few chances were made and squandered in the first half but the intention and play was there, we just needed to take it into the second half. Second half saw the rain coming down and we played with the wind. From the off we applied pressure in the right places and got on top from the word go. It wasnt long until the next goal came. After some good play on the right, by the midfield, the ball was drilled across the face of goal, missing everyone but Mushy, who was there at the back post to turn the ball in with his right peg. Floodgates open - 3-0 Shortly after, continued pressure from the midfield and front line saw Dave Bartlam break on the left, using his left foot, he drills into the box towards Josh Chandler. Defender gets to the ball first and blasts out for a corner. From the corner, Bartlam picks his spot on the six yard box where he finds Fenton, who climbs highest to score with his head for the second consecutive game. 4-0 Newlyn, when they had the ball at their feet proved dangerous at times, but there was no getting past the Gwinear Defence of Shane, Fents and Craig. Yet again these three were solid all game and ensured the Newlyn attack was fizzled out before the ball reached the goalie. After this point, more chances were made and squandered. Mushy and Dave coming close on two occasions but the final ball wasnt there. It was only a matter of time. After some good forward play from the midfield, Bartlam picks the ball up on the edge of the box, dribbles past one and slots to the left of the keeper from 7 yards. 5-0 After another short spell of possession, mushy picked the ball up just outside of the box, and took a run towards goal. After turning one player inside out, he then drilled past the advancing keeper to get his second of the game. Good goal 6-0 An injury to Fents saw the introduction of three new players; Mert, Connor and Reave. Bartlam dropped to CB, Josh to midfield and Connor and Reave up top. Shortly after the introduction of these guys, there was a bit of a tussle in Newlyns box and a shot was taken, player was infringed. Penalty. Nick Troon unselfishly gave up his right to the penalty and handed it to Mushy to complete the Hatrick. Stepping up, he sends the keeper to the left and slots home into the middle of the goal. 7-0 Shortly after the goal and with ten to go, tempers started flaring and tackles were going in left right and centre, with Nick leading the line for Gwinear. Within five minutes, three Newlyn players and Shane were booked (Shane for a professional foul, Newlyn players attempting to break legs). This was the boot up the arse Gwinear wanted to enable them to kick up through the remaining gears. There was some more good football played in the middle and on the wings thanks to the hard work of the midfielders and wing backs, and it wasnt long before the eighth goal was scored. A neat ball was played to Connor out on the right wing, despite his age and inexperience in mens football, he done really well to listen to the call of Bartlam, touching it just into his path. After a short five yard run and from near the right byline, Bartlam hits one from 25yards, finding the top left corner in the process. It was at that moment the whole of Gwinear erupted into a frenzy! Fans were chanting, girls were throwing in their underware and all the players ran to Bartlam, bundling him onto the floor telling him just how great he is... Just kidding... No one said a word. You could hear a pin drop, it was that quiet. Everyone in utter shock at the brilliance that theyd just seen! 8-0 Connor and Reave began to make themselves a nuisance up top and created some good chances, keeping the ball well and playing the right passes. With five minutes to go, A shot was smashed at the keeper who saved well to his left, only for the ball to travel towards the goal. Seeing the danger, a Newlyn player decided to play goalkeeper, palming the ball away on the line. Penalty given. After a little confusion, goalkeeper Peter Willis punched Nick Troon to the ground in order to get the ball. Nick was restrained and pete fired the spot kick into the top right. 9-0. Just kidding, Nick handed the ball to Pete, sportingly. A good game played by all. As usual, it took us a while to get into the game and to pose a serious threat on goal, but once again we were as ruthless as each other. Pete Willis in goal didnt have to do a great deal. A few good saves and clearances but nothing much, thanks to the hard work oft he team. Scored a good penalty Craig, Jason and Shane were as vital at the back for us today as they have been all season. Its hard to write these guys each week up because Im at the opposite side of the field and dont often see or grasp the full extent of the work they do back there, but it doesnt go unnoticed. We have one of the best Defensive records in the league and its mainly down to these guys. Wing backs Mert, Chrissy Wallace and Mushy were superb today. Chrissy as strong as ever and never really put a foot wrong. Mert done well when he came on, picking up from where he left off a few weeks ago. Mushy was as important at the back as he was up top, fully deserving his first Hatrick for the club. Centre midfielders Bash, Nick and Shaun were their usual selves. Strong in the tackle, found feet with the passing and never gave a ball up. Worked hard all game and really help us all out across the park. Nick was a bulldozer today, gave up two penalties and was fully deserving of the man of the match. Josh, so calm and collected on the ball, linking up with the rest of the team rally well and getting on the scoresheet in the process. A great addition to our side. It was good to see Barbs back in the fold, coming on midway through the second half and doing a good job in the centre of the park. Good to see you again mate. Again a massive shoutout must be given to Connor and Reave. When they came on, they were against a few physical players, they just took it all in their stride. At only 16 & 17 respectively, you guys are just as important to the future of this team as you are at the present time. You come on and you do the job thats asked of you without any fuss. With a bit more experience under your belts, you guys will be setting this league on fire and will demand starts on a weekly basis. Its a tough job being a manager, because guys like you make a difference when you come on, the manager then has a selection headache for the next week!!! Keep up the great work fellas!!!! Once again, sorry to those of you (especially the defence) that havent had a massive mention. It takes me long enough to write the report and remember the goals. Please feel free to to add your own bits. Now I have to get back to a screaming 10 day old!!
