HADRAT ABU AYYUB AL ANSARI (RA) On the 49th year of Hijrat, Muaviya (r.a.) dispatched an army to Istanbul under Sufyan bin Awf al-Amiri. Afterwards, he sent another army under the command of his son Yazid to support them. Hadrat Abu Ayyup joined campaign with, despite his age was more than 80 years. In the army, there were famous people from Ashab-i Keraam like Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Omar, Abdulaziz bin Zurara. Hadrat Abu Ayyub joined this campaign, despite he was insisted by the other to not participate on the grounds that he is too sick and he has excuse to abandon jihad. As the war dragged on his illness increased and he was located to a tent at a place called Kagithane. In the meanwhile, Abu Ayyub called the commanders and muhajid and said farewell to them. During this, when Nawfol-Biqali said, “O Ey Rabb! Please give health and wellbeing to Abu Ayyup”, he commaded that “You do not wish this for me, instead say ‘O Ye Rabb! If the ajal (destined time of death) of this man is come, forgive him, if his ajal is not close, then grant him wellbeing and health.’” However, his situation worsened. Meantime, Yazid came by him and asked him whether he wants anything and his will. He said “I do not want anything from your world. However my will and desire is the following that when I die, take my body as far possible as into the country of the enemy and burry me underneath the feet of the fighting mujahit. So, my grave is flattened and indistinct. Leave me there and go back, as I heard Rasulullah saying that ‘A righteous person will be buried right nearby Istanbul.’ I hope that righteous person be me.” And he died. There are other persons from Ashab-i Keraam burried in Istanbul and Hadrat Abu Ayyub is the greatest and leader of them. Istanbul can not be conqured this and next 13 campaigns that the other Islamic sultans attempted. This honor is vouchsafed (nasip) to Gazi Sultan Mehmed Khan in the 15th attempt.
