HAITI Five years on from the devastating earthquake of January - TopicsExpress

HAITI Five years on from the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, there are still real problems in Haiti, including poverty. But this resilient country is on the up and there’s plenty here to reward the adventurous traveller, including a fascinating vodou (voodoo) culture, surprisingly good hiking (‘Ayiti’, the ‘land of mountains’, is the most mountainous country in the Caribbean) and no shortage of good rum. 2015 is the year to go, with several major travel companies launching new trips, new hotels opening up, increased flights and a new airport in Cap-Haïtien in the north to access the country’s UNESCO-listed hilltop fort La Citadelle Henry Christophe. As well as the Citadelle, you’ll want to visit the chaotic, lively capital, Port-au-Prince, including the konpa (traditional Haitian music) clubs, markets and art communities, the coastal town and surfing hotspot Jacmel, the rock pools and waterfalls of Bassin-Bleu and the beaches of Port Salut. It’s also worth putting aside several days to hike among the mountain villages of La Visite National Park and, if you’re up for it, to summit the country’s highest peak, Pic La Selle. That’s just a start; this small country has plenty of possibilities to explore. Haitians are calling it a new beginning and for adventure travellers that has to be an exciting thing to be a part of.
