HAPPY 64TH BIRTHDAY PUP!! By Hon Francis Fonseca On Monday, September 29th, 2014 the People’s United Party celebrated its 64th Birthday. Over these past 64 years, the PUP has been at the center of Belize’s social, political, and economic development every step of the way. The PUP led the nationalist movement that charted our nation’s course to self-government and political Independence in 1981. Every major achievement in Belize’s history and development has come with the PUP leading the way. While the UDP cowered and said Belize was not ready for Independence, George Price and the PUP boldly led the way. It is the PUP who launched an aggressive Land Reform Program which took lands away from major foreign landowners and put them in the hands of the Belizean people. It is the PUP which built roads and bridges connecting all our district towns. It is the PUP that brought water and electricity to even the most remote communities in our country. It is the PUP that established Social Security and the National Health Insurance (NHI). It is the PUP that established our capital of Belmopan and created a sense of national unity thru our flag, national symbols, National Anthem. It is the PUP that introduced and supported the development of the major industries of Sugar, Citrus, Bananas, Aquaculture, Fisheries to Belize. It is the PUP that established the Belize Defense Force to safeguard our territorial integrity. It was the PUP that established Belcast and the National University of Belize. It is the PUP that established the Deep water Port and brought Hydroelectricity to Belize. It is the PUP that nurtured and grew the Tourism Industry from 1998 to 2008 and facilitated the finding of oil in Belize. It is the PUP that built schools in every corner of our country and made education a national priority. And I could go on and on. Indeed the PUP has a great history and legacy of service to Belize. In 2014 we are committed to building on that legacy of struggle and achievement. We reaffirm our deep and abiding commitment to the Social Justice Philosophy and Principles upon which our great Party was founded and pledge to work together to write a new chapter of service to and achievement for the nation and people of Belize. At 64 we are experienced enough to know when and where we have gone wrong and strayed from our core values as a Party and we are wise enough to know what policies, decisions and actions have to be taken to lead Belize forward to a better and brighter future. Forward to Economic Reform, Governance reform, Education Reform and Health Reform! Forward to jobs and investment! Forward to just and equitable development! HAPPY BIRTHDAY PUP!!
