HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDDY GUY! Its rare that a classic blues artist does some of his best work in the later years of his career — especially when his ascendent work has been so profoundly influential. Guys recordings for Cobra and Chess inspired an entire generation of great musicians, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Ronnie Earl, and continue to inspire newcomers as well. And then his 2001 album Sweet Tea helped introduce new listeners to the magical sounds of Mississippi Hill Country. Ironically, it was Guys first introduction to that sound as well. But in a genre where too few artists write songs with creative integrity and intelligence, his 2008 cut Skin Deep is moving, soulful and truth-speaking at a level blues rarely even aspires to these days. Buddy told producer-songwriter Tom Hambridge the story, Tom harnessed it for song, and then Buddys performance made it one of the rare indispensable songs to emerge from the blues mainstream in the past decade.
