HAPPY BIRTHDAY MILES DAVIS! Miles Dewey Davis III born on this day, May 26, 1926 was an American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, together with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Today Jazz legend Miles Davis gets Upper West Side block renamed in his honor! The impresario lived on W. 77th St. between Riverside Dr. and West End Ave. One former neighbor fought for years to get Miles Davis name on the block he called home for nearly 25 years. Davis, who died in 1991, lived at 312 W. 77th St., between Riverside Dr. and West End Ave., for a quarter century, and was known to hold jam sessions on his stoop, much to the chagrin of his silence-loving neighbors.
