HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CHUCK BERRY, OCTOBER 18, 1926 10 / 18 / 1926 = Happy Birthday Chuck Berry ( Charles Edward Anderson Berry.) Hometown = Wentzville, Missouri. While Chuck was in the Summer High School glee club singing bass, he bought a six - string Spanish guitar. His music teacher, Julia Davis, encouraged him to play it as much as he could. In 1952, Chuck started his own group called the Chuck Berry Combo & began playing local clubs in east St. Louis. At this time, Chuck was contemplating a career as either a hairdresser, a singer , or a photographer. A vacation trip to Chicago in 1955 was the deciding factor in Chucks decision. It was during this trip that Chuck met blues singer, Muddy Waters, who encouraged him to go & see Leonard & Phil Chess, the two brothers who owned Chess Records. Chuck auditioned for them with a song he had written called Ida Red. They liked the song, but suggested he change the title. Remembering the name of a cow from a third grade story, Chuck renamed the song Maybellene. The song was recorded, a contract was signed, & the beginning of a legend was launched in July 1955, with his first of many Hits. He is a true Rock & Roll giant, which has been acknowledged by todays superstars like John Lennon of The Beatles & Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Chuck has been a tremendous influence on guitar players around the world. Elvis is The King Of Rock & Roll. I like to call Chuck Berry, The Grandfather Of Rock & Roll. He might be doing his famous Duck Walk at a slower pace, but hes still out there playing Rock And Roll Music. Here is a video clip of Chucks first hit.. youtube/watch?v=LvKDr8AgvK8 Special thanks to our friend, Frank Buongervino, for the above information.
