HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIKE RUTHERFORD! Born Michael Cleote Crawford Rutherford on October 2nd 1950 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Hes a founding member of Genesis and one of the bands only two constant members, the other is keyboardist Tony Banks. Initially serving as Genesis bass guitarist and backing vocalist, Rutherford also perform most of the bands rhythm guitar parts, frequently on 12 string guitar, in collaboration with successive Genesis lead guitarist Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. Following Hacketts departure from Genesis in 1977 he assumed the additional role of lead guitarist on the bands studio albums, beginning with ...And Then There Were Three in 1978. Rutherford was one of the main Genesis songwriters throughout their career and wrote the lyrics for some of the bands biggest international hits. In addition to his work with Genesis, Rutherford released two solo albums in the early 1980s. In 1985, he formed the highly successful spin-off band Mike + The Mechanics, which became a chart topping act and significant live drawl in its own right as well as earning Rutherford an Ivor Novello Award for their 1988 single The Living Years. This song made me cry the first time I heard it because my grandfather had died that day and I think its probably done the same thing to a lot of people thinking about their fathers and grandfathers. Heres Mike + The Mechanics performing The Living Years in 1988.....Enjoy
