HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TOM JOHNSTON! Born Charles Thomas Johnson on August 15th 1948 in Visalia, California. A founder, guitarist, lead vocalist and songwriter for the Doobie Brothers. He has had a forty year on and off relationship with them. In 76, just before Doobie Brothers launched an album support tour, Tom was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer. Doobie Brother bassist Jeff Skunk Baxter proposed recruiting fellow Steely Dan alumni Michael McDonald to fill Toms place on tour. He stayed! This led to three things in the Doobie Brothers. Toms roll shrinking, more commercial success, and a loss of a lot of their original fans (me included) until the return of Tom. Tom left in 1977 when none of the five songs he had written, and the band recorded, appeared on the Living On The Fault Line album. He left the group he had co-founded to rejoin them on their Farewell Tour in 82. The band broke up for 5 years then reformed in at 1987 (without McDonald) and have been a concert draw with a number of excellent albums ever since. Heres a Doobie Brothers recent, little heard, great sounding, song World Gone Crazy.....Enjoy!
