HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Tommy Dorsey! Today, as I have done every year since 2001, I celebrated with cookies, milk, and talking about the legacy of Dorsey and what his music means to me. This year Im on the teacher side of the classroom, and all of my students today were exposed to a history of TD and his recordings. Tommy was the King, and thats that. He led the greatest all-around big band ever, and he is the reason I play music. When I heard his recording of Marie and Song of India just 1 week after I started playing the trombone, I knew THAT was what I wanted to do. Ive had the incredible honor to play with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra directed by the late, great Buddy Morrow, and am proud that my big band Dan Gabel & The Abletones! continues the legacy of the Sentimental Gentleman of Swing.
