HARD HEARTS So Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them…---Exodus 7:22 I love to swim longer distances for exercise. There is a sense of weightlessness and an ease to move through the water. But at this time of the year the lake near us is covered with a thick blanket of ice. The cold has made the ice as hard as rock. When I drive past the lake my thoughts turn to when I will see the water that is presently hidden from my sight. When spring comes there will be an “ice-out” day when the ice is gone and then the time will be much closer to be able to swim again. Coldness of heart makes a hard heart, whether spiritually speaking or physically speaking. It is like concrete that “sets up” and becomes hard. A cold hearted, hard hearted person has their mind set on what they want and not what others want, especially God. In this case, according to the verse above, Pharaoh would not listen to God’s commands through Moses and Aaron. His heart remained hardened against the message and the messengers. He would not do what God commanded. Matthew 24:12 says that in the last days, “And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” Hard hearts or cold hearts directly coincide with lawlessness, not heeding God’s commands. The more lawlessness increases the harder and colder hearts will become, like chopping through very thick ice or standing in a freezing cold wind. Praise the Lord God Almighty that He can soften hearts and melt icy hearts. Yet there are many who will not soften toward Him and will not listen to His messengers or message. But, let us be faithful in sowing God’s Word. Some will fall on “good soil and produce a crop” (Mark 4:20). There are those whose hearts will soften! Dear Father, may I be faithful in sharing Your message with those around me. You can change hearts and do! You changed mine and I am grateful, eternally grateful.
