HARRIS RACING RETAINS THE TITLE It was an interesting afternoon at Borrowdale Park on Sunday with plenty of excitement and the battle for the Leading Trainer Title adding extra spice. The last meeting of the 2013-14 racing season was well supported and thanks to all MOTA members who turned out, bringing guests! Theres always a buzz in the Ipi Tombe Room when we have lots of feet on the floor. Harris Racing once again retained the seasons Training Honours but must have had some anxious moments mid-afternoon when less than $20 separated the two leading stables, stakes-wise. Hearty congratulations to Lisa Harris and Assistant Trainer Bridget Stidolph, and better luck next time Swanson Racing. Champion Jockey Quinton Riddle established supremacy early on when he steered the gallant Gharir filly, Picalilly, to victory in the 1200m MOTA End-Of-Season Juvenile Stakes. Making light work of her 57,5kgs burden, Gee Racings charge finished 2,50 lengths clear of Supa Challenge, with the rest of the field even further back. Well done to all the connections, especially owner/breeder Sarah Lumsden. Quinton, teaming up with Gokhan Terzi, went on to win both feature races - the Breeders Fillies Mile and the 1400m Breeders Sprint. Eversolucky, by Ashaawes, won the Fillies Mile very comfortably, followed home by Argodaba, Hollywood Babe and Tallie Two, but Quinton had to work a lot harder in the next one. Approaching the finish in the Breeders Sprint, Super Trouper and Approval Rating came from a wall of horses, with Riddle and Super Trouper just getting up to beat Terzis other runner by a whisker. Early leader, Count The Music, and Alula Borealis filled the other placings. Apprentice jockey Lovemore Haruzivi aboard Purple Turtle was having his very first ride in a race in the 1200m Little Chikitita Maiden Plate - and he won it - narrowly beating Francois Herholdt on Raw Edge. The War Lord filly was sent out by Corne Spies Racing. Purple Turtle paid $83.30 for a win on the Tote and the Quartet Dividend was $23 588.80. Two other Quartet payouts topped $20 000 during the afternoon. Francois Herholdt riding Briar Rose for Kirk Swanson was involved in a very tight duel with Dawn Light in the 1200m Auvergne MR 65 Handicap. The Swanson/Herholdt combination scored again in the 1800m Earl of Surrey Graduation Plate when Iron Lady finished ahead of Wee Doch n Dorris with Apprentice Norbert Takawira in the irons. Assistant Trainer Bridget Stidolph was in the Winners Enclosure with Marumbala, who was involved in a close tussle with stablemate Wisteria Way in the 1200m Milady MR 70 Handicap for Fillies and Mares. Randall Simons had the ride on Marumbala who was conceding 5,5kgs. This Gharir filly is owned, and was bred, by Black Diamond Thoroughbreds. The next race meeting at Borrowdale Park is on Sunday, September 7th, as the course is now closed for the annual racing break. However it is not too late to get tickets for the Annual Racing Awards Dinner in the Stewart Room at Meikles Hotel on Saturday, August 2nd.
