HASHTAG THIS , As much media attention as they get — which is the whole point, after all — mass demonstrations and protests dont usually change much when it comes right down to it. Thats especially true when the protests are against the actions of terrorists, who are, by definition, defiant of popular opinion; indeed, their most powerful weapon is shock. They dont want societys approval, just its fear. Just think about the global outrage last spring when the previously unknown (in this part of the world) radical Islamist group Boko Haram kidnapped 230 Nigerian schoolgirls, with the intention of selling them into slavery or taking them as concubines. In Boko Harams deranged view, that was the godly thing to do. The seizure of so many children prompted a flood of effete denunciation through the much-publicized #BringBackOurGirls Twitter campaign in the First World. Many in the West were quite pleased with themselves for having joined together to condemn this atrocity, of course, but Boko Haram, apparently, was not much impressed. A number of girls escaped, but not a single one was ever returned voluntarily. These poor kids were distributed like prizes among the favored members of that group and like-minded fundamentalist cadres who feel divinely authorized to treat them as chattel. But youd never know that sad outcome from people such as Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian and Sean Penn, who acted as if they had struck a decisive blow for reason and freedom with their cyber-campaign. Theyve since moved on to other world-saving causes. And Boko Haram? It has continued its own twisted crusade without missing a beat. Last week, these monsters committed the deadliest massacre in the groups bloody history in several villages in northeast Nigeria. Hashtag that.
