HB 423 Defeated - Amazing Victory for Raccoons in Georgia Hunters in Georgia wanted to use LIVE raccoons in traps and torture them as bait in hunting field trials. In addition, this horrible bill would have handed oversight of wildlife management to the Department of Natural Resources, an agency that is generally stocked with hunters and trappers. But, you said, NO WAY!, and killed this horrific, wildlife hating bill. Activists from all over the world wrote emails, letters, signed petitions and our alert, and made calls to Georgia wildlife officials, state senators and congressmen, and the Governor. In a slimy attempt to trick the public, hunters then tried to attach HB 423 to another bill which was slated to pass. However, the emails, letters of opposition, and calls kept coming, and the issue became such a hot potato that the Governor ordered his commissioner not to pass the bill, but instead, to bury it! This is an incredible example of how the nonviolent, pro-wildlife public can overpower hunters and trappers. If it can happen in Georgia, it can happen everywhere.
