HEALTHCARE If healthcare did not have enough problems with Obamacare, here comes a technical snaffu that may shut down the entire thing. Friends, I have been out of healthcare 14 years now but the 24 years I worked in the industry one of the many important cogs in getting healthcare claims paid correctly was a little 4 or 5 digit code that described the patients diagnosis and known lovingly as the ICD9 code. This descriptive methodology goes back to the 1940s in paying healthcare claims. This coming Oct 1, 2014 has something NEW to offer healthcare administrative personnel. The industry must move to a new, upgraded form of ICD known affectionately as ICD10! The magic is that the 4 or 5 digits is growing to up to seven digits. The purpose is to be more descriptive with the diagnosis. On the surface, one may think this is not all that big a deal until you move into the electronic world. In a computer, characters take SPACE! And programmers rarely code in growth room. In other words, in the computer there is currently no room for the extra 3 or 4 digits! What to do..... What to do! This is an enormous problem for technical, electronic healthcare administrative personnel and although has nothing to do directly with Obamacare, will certainly lend to the massive confusion and problems in the healthcare insurance arena for 2014, 2015 and going forward. I thought you might want to know. americanthinker/2014/03/the_october_surprise_that_could_cripple_the_practice_of_medicine.html#.UzXbitX1KHw.facebook
