HECTOR’S DOLPHIN In keeping with it’s tiny size Before New Zealand’s dolphin dies Gill-nets have been set aside Hoping it can Ride the tide In shallow beds off the Coast Where it stands endangered most - But that does not its life ensure; More dangers too It must endure - From oil spills and trawler catch The wits of man it must match When his rod is hell-bent on Lining one Before its dawn! The Maui kind has up and left I presume it wasn’t all that deft Just a few now skip the waves Ere they end up In their graves Or eaten by the Killer Whale In one flash of its fin and tail - Yet, those who care, come to see, Its sheer love of Frivolity!
