HIGHLAND: Two juveniles accused of setting playground fire BRIAN ROKOS / STAFF WRITER A 16-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were arrested Monday, Jan. 5, when San Bernardino County sheriffs officials said they returned to the scene of an arson fire in Highland to brag about their actions. The East Highland residents were booked into Juvenile Hall, a news release said. The playground equipment was torched Sunday morning at Arroyo Verde Elementary at 7701 Church St., the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department said, causing up to $100,000 damage. Investigators identified two possible suspects after viewing surveillance video and interviewing witnesses. The investigators concluded that about 11 a.m. Sunday, the suspects rode skateboards around the playground before they set a plastic piece of playground equipment ablaze. The melted plastic dripped onto the bark ground covering below, causing the fire to spread. The suspects then ran and jumped the fence into the Stater Bros. shopping center, where they watched firefighters douse the flames, the release said. The suspects came back to campus Monday, with school still closed for the holiday break, and bragged to friends about the fire, the release said. They were arrested when someone reported about 2 p.m. that four juveniles were trespassing, and deputies recognized the suspects.
