HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ADJUDICATOR IN STREET! SHARE THIS AND LET THE WORLD KNOW HOW GOOD YOU WERE! WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!!! "This show, almost more than any other I can think of relies on a meeting of minds and a close working relationship between the director and his associates, the MD and the choreographer. It is therefore hugely to the credit of Cy Boddy that this production achieved the impressively high standard which it did. From beginning to end there was a controlled energy and dynamism rarely seen in amateur productions of this genre. Of particular note was the ensemble playing – all of the principals had achieved an evenness of (very high) standard and none was trying to eclipse another, even amongst so many dazzling performances. This is one of the main and frequently overlooked tasks of the director – evenness of performance plus consistency of style. This director had this completely under his control and the result was nothing short of spectacular. Every individual performance was clearly defined and effectively projected but the sense of teamwork was palpable, especially in the large chorus numbers. The pace throughout was perfect, strumming along briskly but occasionally pausing with a reflective break such as the very delicately handled scene between Schlomo and Carmen over the writing of Bring on Tomorrow – beautifully done. The visualisation of the piece was spot-on and albeit updated to the present time, the essence of the genre was captured perfectly. The setting and excellent use of the stairs made for some very interesting and arresting stage-pictures and the movement of the actors was unfussy, practical and very effective. Casting was extremely well executed but then you seemed to have a galaxy of available talent. It isn’t always easy when specific racial types are implied by the text, such as a black Tyrone and a Jewish Schlomo but I think it was handled very well. The American accents were maintained with amazing authenticity by all, throughout."
