HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Amadeus (Milos Forman 1984) Adapted from the stage play of the same name by Peter Shaffer by himself, Amadeus is a biographical period drama directed by Milos Forman and starring Tom Hulce in the titular role. Told in flashback by the aging Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) in 1823 as he begs forgiveness for having murdered Mozart thirty years earlier and confesses his sins to a priest, explaining how jealousy and envy led him to commit this crime. A devout man, Salieri swore celibacy as a youth if he would be blessed by God with the opportunity to have a successful career as a composer. Having become the court composer for Emperor Joseph II (Jeffrey Jones), Salieri was satisfied with his position and talent until young and vulgar musical prodigy Mozart arrives on the scene. Initially excited to meet the wunderkind, Salieri soon finds out that Mozart is the opposite of what he expected. Whilst his compositions are divine and greatly admired by Salieri, the man himself appears to be nothing but a lewd brute. And as Mozart gains in popularity around the court, Salieris envy increases as does his inability to understand why God would bless such a man with such a gift. Slowly but surely he begins to secretly sabotage Mozarts career and when Amadeus is at his weakest Salieri devises a plan in which he commissions him to write a requiem mass, a task which will take so much out of the young composer, it will prove fatal. A stunning film with lush costume and production design and, needless to say, an amazing soundtrack, Amadeus is a marvelously entertaining biopic with two staggering lead performances by Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham. The screenplay is equally great as it plays with the paradox between Mozarts incredible talent and the irreverant personality behind it whilst also delving into Salieris psyche, who at once is in complete awe of his rivals genius whilst also being his greatest foe. Amadeus was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, winning eight of them including Best Film, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction and Costume Design. The movie also won four Golden Globes (Best Film, Actor, Director and Screenplay), four BAFTA Awards (Best Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Make-Up) and Best Foreign Film at the César Awards in France, the David di Donatello Awards in Italy and the Kinema Junpo Awards in Japan, in addition to a lengthy string of other prizes worldwide. https://youtube/watch?v=ao2kS2_hybk
