HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THERE SHOULD BE MORE DANCING Review by Carolyn Adams A seriously funny story about Margery who has lived for 60 years in Brunswick, Melbourne and is just learning the secrets that her family and neighbours have known for years. She is accompanied at all times by her sister Cecily who died when they were 15yo! Prize winning, boxing champion son, Walter was brain damaged at his last fight and comes each Sunday with a frozen chicken for next weekend’s dinner. Her other son, Morris, has been tied up with business in Thailand - for the past 25 years! Judith and her husband want Mum in a nursing home so they can liquidate the valuable property – and I particularly liked their straight-talking daughter “Pudding”. Rosalie Ham writes these characters beautifully along with an assortment of interesting neighbours and she has a wonderful knack of drip-feeding Margery’s life story so that we gradually come to understand the complexity of the different relationships Margery has with her neighbours and family. Even the “car” has a role in this delightful book but we mustn’t forget that it belongs to Morris. An absolute delight to read.
