HILLSIDE HELPS-“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” (Ps 34:4) Fear seeks to distract and drive us away from God, while faith draws us close to God. When we go through difficult times in life, IE: a problem at work, rebellious children, chronic pain, the sudden loss of a loved one or friend, or perhaps a recent diagnosis by a physician, the natural thing do is become fearful. But fear only drains us of energy and causes our minds to be divided, which only makes the struggle more challenging. God wants us to trust Him at all times and through every circumstance we face. But this is no simple task. Faith is given to us when we are saved. It is only by faith that we can please God. Faith must grow in order to become strong. It takes only child like faith to trust the Lord for salvation and mustard seed faith to move mountains, but faith must be exercised in order to grow strong. In order to stand against the fears that would invade our lives, we must continue to grow spiritually, read the Word of God, and pray constantly. The Psalmist gave us a testimony and put this in simple terms we can understand, “I sought the Lord.” This means to forsake all else and seek God in faith. We are to willfully and intentionally set aside every earthly possession and relationship as secondary, and make God the continuous focus moment by moment. Remember He created each of us and knows every cell in our body from head to toe. He watches over us constantly in both the day and night. He desires our attention and love. We must seek Him with all of our heart and soul. The Psalmist then said, “And He heard.” God heard his prayer because He was listening. We have difficulty listening, but God can hear every cry of our hearts. In fact He can hear what we want to say, but cannot put it into words. “…Because He (God the Holy Spirit) maketh intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26b) What peace and comfort is given to us when we know that our God is always available and listening. God not only heard the prayer of the psalmist David, but also provided an answer, “… and delivered me from all my fears”. God desires to deliver us from all our fears. While He leads us through the struggles in life He tells us, “BE NOT AFRAID”. We don’t have to be afraid for God is our Father, Healer, Savior, and Lord. He is able to do anything at any moment. He will provide whatever we will ever need. Today, many of you are facing things that have caused you to be afraid. I encourage you to keep trusting God no matter how difficult the way may seem. Remember “with God all things are possible”. He will deliver you, not only from the circumstance you are in, but also from the fears that accompany them. I love and pray for you all.
