HIT & RUN on the B1! Loving animals the way we do, makes days like today - ones you want to forget! At around 6:30 this morning we got a call from a concerned gentleman who was driving past our turn-off on the B1 - (the main rd between Windhoek and the north of the country). He had just passed a cheetah that had been hit by a car, but left to die - although it was still alive . . . Louis rushed off immediately, but knew whatever we found will be bitter sweet . . Bitter: “When I got there, I could not see it from the road, but when I walked the cattle-fence next to the road where the grass is longer – sure enough, there she was – very much alive, crawling away from the main rd - trying to find safety somewhere, anywhere . . . . Her back was clearly broken and there was no hope. The jackals had already attacked her, and now seeing humans - made her even more terrified. We had to put her down. On closer inspection I could see that the back, right leg was also shattered.” Sweet: Nothing about this morning was sweet, BUT the fact that we are still living in a country where its normal to see a cheetah run past your vehicle in the middle of no-where - far from any nature park/game reserve, even after years of being persecuted by man - makes you realise how special this country is!! PLEASE STOP IF YOU HIT ANY ANIMAL BY MISTAKE! HIT&RUNS ARE CRUEL AND INHUMANE! She could have still had cubs under her care . . . Let’s hope, if she did they will survive without their mother!
