HOLY GHOST REVIVAL MISSION WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY - 18/03/2014 SERIES:: special study (7) Topic: ARE YOU a TRUE disciple of christ ? Text: jn.1/35-47; 8/30-31; Lk9/23-26, 57-62; 14/25-33 general name used to address Christians is “disciples,” or followers of Christ. But, every professing Christian is not a disciple of Christ in the true sense of the word. Nevertheless, only disciples of Christ are the real Christians (Acts. 11/26) The disciples were called Christians, in Antioch, because of their commitment to the lifestyle of Christ. The name “Christian” by which disciples were called in Antioch means “Christlike”. This name has remained the best for the followers of Christ. Its use in Acts 11/26; 26/28 - 29; and I Pet. 4/16 indicates that the Holy Spirit considers it the highest name a human being can bear on earth. I. THE MEANING OF A DISCIPLE a. A disciple of Christ is a decided, declared, dedicated, and developing follower of Christ. b. A disciple is a learning follower, whose goal is to become like the Master. (Mk. 1/17; 3/14-15). c. A disciple of Christ is: i. a listener to Christ (Mt. 5/1-2) ii. a learner from Christ (Mt. 11/29) iii. a lover of Christ (Jn. 5/65-69; 21/15-17; I Jn. 4/19) II. THE MOTIVE OF MANY IN FOLLOWING CHRIST Among those called disciples were those who followed Him i. for curiosity ii. for company iii. for camouflage iv. for cure v. for care vi. for comfort vii. for cover viii. for counsel * Real disciples followed Him for change of lives and for commitment, and for conformity to His image i.e. becoming like Him ! (Jn. 6/67-69; Rom. 8/29). III. THE MESSAGE FROM THE MASTER (Lk. 9/23-26) *Disciples of Christ are those: i. whose main goal is to become like Christ Himself (Eph. 4/13) ii. who watch the foot prints of the Master and seek to plant their own there (2 Cor. 12/18) iii. who are determined to bring glory to God in every aspect of their lives (Jn. 2/11; 17/4) iv. who have seen the works of the devil and are going about to destroy them (Jn. 14/12; Mk. 16/20; 8/4-5) v. who want to see the church winning the world for Jesus (Acts 5/27-28; 17/6) * The conditions of discipleship are clearly stated in Lk. 9/23-26; 14/26-27, 33) Will you fulfil these conditions ? Reflection: “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31)
