HOMBRES LUNCHBOX My oldest boy Justin was introduced to motorcycles even before he could walk. That is, having a 360 Yamaha RT2 in the front room of our house was definitely an introduction. Fact is when dad has 5 motorcycles Hes getting a pretty strong intro. Now that hes a man with youngins of his own his garage is filled to opacity with bikes. He & his girls are into motocross & go to the dome events when theyre in town. Well that just isnt motocross to me having seen the real thing when it was about speed instead of acrobatics. A motocross race was 45 minutes long plus two laps. & there were two heats. In terms of physical endurance motocross was ranked third behind Rugby, & Soccer & ahead of Football, Basketball, & all the rest. I dont want to take anything away from what todays motocrossers are doing because it takes some skill not to mention guts to do gymnastics while flying so high in the air. But thats all it is is fluffy circus stunts.That in itself naturally evolved from the early stages of the Super Dome of MX racing where the promoters knew they had to add a hook to generate excitement in such a confined space. So they added pyramid jumps, rugboard whoop de dos, mud pits, & many hairpin turns. REWIND! Youre outside & the track is a half mile long filled with many jumps including one pyramid. The whoop de dos are farther apart, sometimes there is a waterhole, & long straight ways to wrap it out. In the world of motocross not only was there none like Roger De Coster none came close. He was 5 time world champion in the 70s winning 36 500cc races. He established himself as the all time greatest MXer. When you look at the pictures of him rounding a turn hes going so fast that his handlebars are almost dragging the ground from leaning it over. I watched him race just after having his back broke & he lapped all the other racers once & a lot of them twice before he won. That aint flying but it is motocross.
