HOME Why do we call Heaven “our home”? According to Merriam Webster home is a place where a person or a family normally lives or is located, a familiar or usual setting, a place of origin. Even in cyberspace “HOME” implies returning to the original cyber location. After we turned in our immigration application back in 1970s in Romania, we dreamed of America. We researched, we planned, we talked to people, we asked those who had already immigrated to the United States to send us pictures. We could not wait to get there and we were totally and completely sold out to this new country. And we gladly gave up our Romanian citizenship for this new citizenship – to be an American! And yet, I don’t recall ever calling America “my home.” America did not become my home until after I arrived, after I fell in love with the Smoky Mountains and the fiery autumn leaves. I didn’t call it home until I married my soul mate at a small church in Norcross. I didn’t call it home until my sons were born at Northside Hospital. I didn’t call it home until I watched the laser show at Stone Mountain and got chills when Elvis’ voice flooded the entire park in a majestic “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah.” That is when America became my home. And now, it is my home. No matter where I would travel, America is the place I call home, the place I return to as my home. So why do we call Heaven our home? How can we hold it dear in our hearts as our Home unless we’ve been there, unless it was our home and we long to return there? How can it be the home as defined by Webster unless it is a familiar or usual setting to us, our place of origin? I can’t help but wonder if that millisecond I experienced a few years ago was a flash-back to the place we came from. The place we call home because somehow we know it as our home. The concept is quite unorthodox and unconventional, not to mention right down heretic… to some. Or is it one of mysteries hidden so deep in the Bible that the average reader would read it a thousand times and never see it. “… drink from the water children ‘cause you don’t know nothing about this.”
