HONOUR TO WHOM HONOUR IS DUE “He who reverences those worthy of reverence, whether Buddhas or their disciples; those who have overcome the impediments (attachment, false views and pride) and have got rid of grief and lamentation, - the merit of him who reverences such peaceful and fearless ones cannot be measured by anyone as such and such.” - Dhammapada While Lord Buddha was dwelling at an old shrine, a Brahmin came to see him and worshiped at the shrine. The Buddha admonished him that it was more commendable to reverence the Pure Ones. According to Mangala Sutta, to honour those who are worthy of honour, is one of the thirty eight supreme blessings need to be followed by one who seeks for spiritual progress and happiness. “Puja cha pujaniyantham etam mangalamuttamam.” Apachayana (Reverence) is described in the “Ten Meritorious Deeds” as: paying respect and reverence to the Buddha, Dhamma and Sanga, to parents and other elders, to teachers and any others leading virtuous lives.
