HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — National Weather Service meteorologists confirmed Sunday that two small tornadoes touched down in the Socastee area Saturday. A team from Wilmington visited Socastee Sunday morning to assess the damage and found that a tornado with winds of up to 60 mph touched down in the Cameron Village neighborhood with a path length of one-tenth of a mile and 35 yards wide, according to science and operation officer Reid Hawking with NWS. “It was very small,” he said Sunday afternoon. A home that was in the process of having its frame constructed collapsed and the boards of that home hight a nearby house causing some damage to a garage, Hawking said. He said some shingles came off the roofs of other homes in the neighborhood. The second small tornado, which also had winds up to 60 mph, touched won near the intersection of S.C. 31 and S.C. 544 near the Amberfield neighborhood. Hawking said there was some damage to the roofs and siding of homes, as well as some trees. That tornado was 40 yards wide and 125 yards long, he said. On Saturday, NWS meteorologist Tim Armstrong told The Sun News it was likely that residents reported seeing was, in fact, a tornado. “I’ve seen enough video from news sources down there that I can say it was likely a touchdown,” Armstrong said Saturday. “One video showed debris about 200 feet in the air, which would be indicative of a very weak tornado with winds less than 75 mph.” Read more here: heraldonline/2013/06/30/4988289/national-weather-service-confirms.html#storylink=cpy
