HOW CAN I DISCOVER THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD? by John Hibbert Posted - TopicsExpress

HOW CAN I DISCOVER THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD? by John Hibbert Posted on May 27, 2014 It’s the age-old question. Is He really there? Does God even exist? How can I know? These are questions which are asked, not just by ordinary people who are trying to get the best out of life for themselves and their families, but by thousands of people who are sitting in churches all over the world. They have discovered that religion does not show them God. Whatever brand of religion it is, it does not bring the individual into personal contact with God. Millions of Roman Catholics faithfully attend mass every week, but, if they are honest, most of them will acknowledge that they have not really discovered God. Untold numbers of Protestants attend their fine churches, but they have no more vital contact with the Almighty than the irreligious man in the street. Evangelicals meet in their fine auditoriums and attract the crowds with modern music led by ever more professional ‘worship leaders’, but thousands of their attendees are bound by sin and are still asking the question, “Is God real?” There is so much hypocrisy, politics, self-seeking and even lies within the so called church that, not only does it fail to reveal who God really is, it actually drives people away from Him. The unfortunate truth is that religion does not work. Religion has so often been a cloak for the most disgusting acts of sin and provided the arena in which little men, who would never make it in management or politics in the secular world, contend for power and prestige in a kingdom of their own making. No wonder that the Lord Jesus Christ reserved His most scathing words for the religious hypocrites of His day. There has been little change across the centuries. Millions of sincere and honest people want to know if God is real. In the boredom and uncertainty of life they search for an answer beyond the obvious, while the religious world plays at church and argues amongst itself. As a small boy I used to wonder about God. I raised my head and scanned the night sky with its myriad blinking stars and felt the presence of someone so big, so awesome, that I wanted to know Him. Was someone out there, or was this feeling merely a figment of my imagination? I needed to know! I believe that there are countless numbers of people who feel like that. They do not want to be fooled by some weird religious dogma, but they want to know the truth. If there is a God, they want to discover Him. If our search for God is like a race and the ‘finish line’ reveals Him to us in all His glory, then we need to find the starting block. We need to know where to begin. Where can mortal man first discover God, take His first dip into the Divine presence and feel the warmth of sacred love? Actually, you can find the starting block almost anywhere; walking through the meadow on a warm spring morning or through the forest glade as raindrops rattle against the leaves far above your head. You can find it on lonely mountain slopes or in the cellar of your home. You can even find it sometimes in church. IT’S CALLED THE CROSS!
