HOW REMOVAL OF 1 SPECIES CAN IMPACT AN ECOSYSTEM: When all the wolves in and near Yellowstone were killed, numbers of elk increased dramatically. When that happened, the elk over-browsed. Since wolves are back in Yellowstone, the elk browse, especially on berry bushes has diminished. Now, with wolves in the area again, berry bushes are flourishing. This means that grizzly bears and black bears will have more berries this summer to fatten up on. Both bears need to put on a lot of weight before winter denning.
